Geopolitical Tensions Spill Over into Group Stage Elimination
The geopolitical friction between the United States and Iran found its way into the World Cup 2026 following Team Melli's early elimination. Finishing as the ninth best third-placed team, Iran's exit sparked candid remarks from US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin during a Washington summit.
Speaking to the Sports Business Journal, Mullin did not hide his relief regarding the security logistics. "I was so happy when we got their visas and told them they could leave US territory, I might have even sung a song or two, or done a little joy dance," Mullin stated.

Mullin alleged that nearly half of the delegation Iran attempted to bring held direct links to the Revolutionary Guards. Consequently, tight restrictions forced Iran to base their camp in Mexico, only being permitted to enter US territory for 24-hour windows to play their scheduled group matches.
Lashing out at the grueling travel arrangements and delayed visa approvals, the Iranian football federation launched an official complaint with FIFA. Iran labeled themselves 'the most mistreated team at the World Cup' as geopolitical conflicts since February continue to overshadow the tournament.
